Power-ups always add some fun and spontaneity to games. They give players a change from the otherwise repetitiveness of your game. A couple well placed power-ups (or random ones) can turn your boring avoider or platform game into a fun and exciting hit. Here’s a list of power-up ideas to get you started.
- Extra lives
- Replenish health
- Increase max health
- Deal double damage
- Take half damage
- Be invincible for a certain amount of time
- Unlock a new weapon
- Replenish weapon ammo
- Speed boost
- Increased jump height
- Slow down time
- Stop time
- Speed up time
- Bigger character
- Smaller character
- Invisibility
- Armor
- Let player travel through walls and enemies
- Transformation
- Flight
- Manipulate Gravity
- Reverse Controls
- Drain enemy health
- Unlock new character or area
- Hide player from enemies
I tried to be as general as possible with this list so that the power-ups could apply to a wide range of games. If you feel I missed anything, feel free to mention it in the comments.

What’s the point of giving the “reverse control” type? irritating players?

It’s just something to mix up the game play. It could make it more challenging in an avoider type game where how you move would make a big difference on whether you win on lose.
