Thanks icarus, glad you like it. :)

I haven't hired an artist in awhile, but I believe that would be more than enough. It depends on how much you think your game can get sponsored for. You want to get quality graphics, but at the same time don't want to pay so much that the cut you have the pay the artist overshadows the amount you are receiving for the sponsorship.

I'd recommend posting a project on Flash Game Art where you set up the max price you would be willing to pay and see who bites. From their you can determine how much you would be willing to pay for the quality of art the 'bidders' are capable of. Also, to get a good idea of how much artists want, you could also take a look at the projects currently on Flash Game Art and how much artists are bidding on those.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the awesome post, just found this website today and it really does have a lot of awesome info.

When hiring someone for a flat fee, does anyone have any experience with how much artists expect? Would $500 be enough for a small scale game without much animation, just good graphics and good menus?

What do you reckon?

Thanks for the suggestion Arby. With the new art portal as well, Newgrounds is even better for finding an artist. I've updated the post :)

I'd like to mention that the Newgrounds flash forum can be a great place to find artists and animators as well. You just have to make sure they are good! Another thing to mention is that the 50% rule is essentially standard there.
