Free Graphics for your Games
If you’re looking to spice up your game with some graphics but don’t have the funds to pay for them, your choices will usually be limited. Most graphics will have a license on them that doesn’t allow them to be used in commercial works, so it can be tough to find good ones. Well, in this post I’m going to show you where you can go to get great free graphics for your games.
Lost Garden has some great sets of graphics that are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License, meaning that the only requirement for using them is that you include a link back to his site in your credits. There are a couple different sets of graphics for you to use:
1. The first set of graphics includes a wide range of graphics ranging from tile sets to characters and game items. These graphics are much more open to different game types than his other set. It seems to lean towards 2d game such platformers, brawlers, and a wide range of puzzle type games.
2. The second set of game graphics is designed for the creation of strategy games, tower defense games, and role playing games. It’s essentially the graphics you need to create your own little world. The set includes 70 quality graphics ranging from land and ocean sculpting to buildings and trees. The best part is the files are right inside a flash file, ready for use. There’s no need to export them into Flash. At the moment only CS3 files are included though, so you’re left out if you’re using flash 8.
3. The next set is a mixture of 3 tile sets. It includes beautiful graphics for game backgrounds. The game type it is focused on seems to be RPG’s, but there are many other uses for it as well. The 3 sets range from a village theme to interiors theme as well as the wilderness theme. The wilderness tile set may seem familiar because it was the art used in the popular Boxhead series.
I had been planning to put a number of different sites into this list, but I honestly couldn’t find any better than these. I didn’t include all of his sets in here, so if you want to seeĀ what else he has to offer check out his posts on free game graphics.

Another very nice set of free graphics, for anyone who’s interested is Danc’s Miraculously Flexible Game Prototyping Graphics.
They’re meant for prototyping, but are free to use/modify for any purpose (even commercial) as long as you give credit.
